#14 Wesleyan sweeps Amherst for Little Three title

AMHERST, Mass. – Wesleyan University repeated as Little Three Champions with a straight-set win over the Amherst College volleyball team, 25-14, 25-22, 25-15, in NESCAC action on Saturday afternoon at LeFrak Gymnasium.

The Cardinals, ranked 14th in the nation in the latest AVCA Division III poll, improved to 13-1 on the season and remained undefeated in NESCAC play at 6-0, while the Mammoths saw their three-match winning streak snapped, falling to 6-7 overall and 3-4 in conference play.

The Mammoths are back in action on Thursday (Oct. 12), hosting local rival Springfield at 7 p.m. in LeFrak Gymnasium.

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS:

* The Cardinals won the first four points and remained in control of the opening set. A run of five straight points gave Wesleyan a 13-3 lead on the serve of sophomore Sophia Lindus and the Cardinals held on for a 25-14 win in the set.

* The second set was much closer as the Mammoths won the opening point and a kill from senior Carly Cooper was followed by a block by juniors Kinsey Cronin and Anaya Thomas to tie the set at 5-5. Wesleyan won the next two points to reclaim the lead and hold the Mammoths at bay until graduate student Bella Ahearn ended the set with a kill into the Amherst block for a 25-22 edge in the second set.

* The third set was tight early as a kill from first-year Chideraa Ngwadom and an ace from sophomore Charlotte Rasmussen tied the set at 4-4 before back-to-back Wesleyan kills gave the Cardinals the lead. A string of four straight Wesleyan points on the serve of first-year Elliana Moreno put the Cardinals up, 11-6, and Wesleyan extended its lead to clinch the match with a 25-15 third-set win off a block from seniors K.G. Morton and Mariko Tanaka.

BY THE NUMBERS:

* Lindus led the Cardinals with a game-high 22 kills to go with 10 digs and 2 aces.

* Rasmussen led the Mammoths with 9 kills and 12 digs.

* Cooper tallied 20 assists and 10 digs for the Mammoths.
