AMHERST, Mass. -- The Amherst College volleyball team put up a good fight Thursday night but ultimately fell short of a super Springfield College team in three sets, 25-19, 25-17 and 25-11.
Amherst is now 5-7 on the season while Springfield improved to 18-1. The Mammoths are at Tufts Saturday for a 2:30 p.m. match.
MATCH HIGHLIGHTS:
* Down 10-5 in the opening set, the Mammoths scored four straight points to make it 10-9 on two kills each from
Carly Cooper and
Anaya Thomas.
* That would be as close as Amherst could get as the Pride scored seven of the next eight points and won the set, 25-19.
* In the middle set, Amherst took a 4-3 lead on kills by
Chloe Chanren and
Charlotte Rasmussen.
* After Springfield tied the set at 4-4, Amherst reeled off three straight points for a 7-4 lead. Chideraa Ngwadon and
Kinsey Cronin teamed up for a block point for a 5-4 lead and then kills from Cronin and
Allie McLaughlin.
* Springfield led by one before going on a 7-1 run to take the set, 25-17.
* The Pride closed out the match with a 25-11 decision in the final set.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* Lizzle Papalia led the Mammoths with 21 digs while
Renee Liou notched 9 and
Carly Cooper 6.
* Thomas and Rasmussen each had 6 kills to lead Amherst.
