MEDFORD, Mass. -- The Amherst College suffered its third straight setback Saturday afternoon, falling in three straight sets to conference rival Tufts at the Cousens Gym.
Amherst dropped to 6-9 overall and 3-5 in conference play, The Mammoths host UMass-Dartmouth Friday, October 20th at 7 p.m. Tufts improved to 9-7 overall and 4-4 in NESCAC play.
MATCH HIGHLIGHTS:
* In the opening set Amherst took a slight 8-6 advantage after a
Carly Cooper service ace, but Tufts came back to take a 13-11 lead after a kill from senior
Cora Cunningham. Amherst made the score 17-14 Tufts on a Jumbos' attack error., but the host Jumbos rattled off a 7-1 run highlighted by a pair of aces from senior libero
Megan Harrison to take the 1-0 match edge.
From that point on though, Amherst would go cold offensively as it totaled just 11 more kills for the second and third match. Meanwhile, Tufts posted 26 over the next two stanzas including tallying just 10 errors for the match in pulling away for the win.
* In the second set, the Mammoths held a 5-3 lead early on a pair of kills from
Charlotte Rasmussen and a service by
Katelyn Hamasaki. Trailing 13-7, they went on a 4-1 run to make it 14-11 Tufts thanks in part ot a kill from Rasmussen and a
Lizzie Papalia service ace. That was as close as the Mammoths would get however as they fell 25-14.
* The third set was all Tufts ending in a 25-9 score to complete the sweep.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* Rasmussen finished with eight kills in the loss for the Mammoths.
Chideraa Ngwadom had 4 kills and
Anaya Thomas 2 for the Mammoths.
* Cooper had 11 assists and Papalia 11 assists.
Chloe Chanren had 2 blocks.
