Corsairs cruise to sweep of Mammoths

AMHERST, Mass. -- Despite 18 kills from Charlotte Rasmussen, the Amherst College volleyball team suffered a 25-22, 25-12, 25-20 sweep at the hands of the UMass-Dartmouth Corsairs Friday night in LeFrak Gymnasium. 

The Mammoths fell to 6-10 on the season. They will host the University of Hartford Saturday at 2 p.m. in another non-conference match-up in LeFrak Gymnasium. 

UMass-Dartmouth improved to 14-6 with its seventh straight victory. 

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS:

* The Mammoths trailed 16-10 in set one, but reeled off seven straight points to take their first lead of the set at 17-16. Rasmussen and Bailey Reid opened the run with back-to-back kills. Carly Cooper later added a kill and Chloe Chanren a service ace before a bad set by the Corsairs gave Amherst its one-point lead. 

* The Mammoths then took the lead at 18-17 on a kill from Rasmussen and at 19-18 on another Cooper kill. After falling behind 20-19. a kill from Anaya Thomas tied the set 20-20. After falling behind 24-21, another Thomas kill brought the Mammthos back within two at 24-22, but the Corsairs closed out the set, 25-22. 

* Amherst fell behind 9-5 early in the second set, but four straight points for the Mammoths tied the set at 9-9. Cooper served 3 of the four points, including an ace, while Rasmussen gad two kills. 

* UMass-Dartmouth then went on a 10-1 run to take a 10-19 lead en route to the 25-12 set two win.

* Amherst took an early 8-4 lead in the third set. Rasmussen had four kills to help build the lead and Tiana Richardson had a big block kill.

* Leading 10-9, the Mammoths reeled off seven straight points to a commanding 17-9 lead. Three straight kills from Chanren, Thomas and Rasmussen ignited the run. Chanren and Thomas then team up for a block kill. That was followed by another Rasmussen kill and then back-to-back aces from Cooper. 

* Two more kills from Rasmussen helped the Mammoths stay on top, the last making it 19-15. However, the Corsairs went on a 10-1 run to ned the set and the match.

BY THE NUMBERS:

* Rasmussen led both teams with 18 kills and hit ..267 for the match. Thomas had six kills and Cooper four.

* Cooper added 24 assists and 15 digs in addition to her 4 kills. Lizzie Papalia led the Mammoths with 19 digs.
