AMHERST, Mass. – Led by a career-high 13 kills from first-year
Tiana Richardson, the Amherst College volleyball team picked up a four-set win over the University of Hartford, 25-12, 18-25, 25-18, 25-23, in a match marked by extended runs for both sides on Saturday afternoon at LeFrak Gymnasium.
The Mammoths improved their record to 7-10 overall while the Hawks, in the process of reclassifying from Division I to Division III, fell to 3-8 on the season.
The Mammoths are back in action on Friday (Oct. 27), hosting Bates for a NESCAC clash at 7 p.m. in LeFrak Gymnasium.
MATCH HIGHLIGHTS:
* Hartford took a 3-1 lead in the first set before the Mammoths came back to tie the set at 4-4. A spurt that put the Hawks up, 8-5, was answered by an 8-1 Amherst run to give the Mammoths a 13-9 lead.
* The Mammoths put the set out of reach with a run of 10 straight points on the serve of senior
Katelyn Hamasaki with an ace giving Amherst set point. After first-year Zahara Quraishi got a kill to keep the set alive, senior
Carly Cooper recorded a kill for Amherst to close out the set on the next point.
* A back-and-forth second set was tied at 15-15 before seven straight Hartford points on the serve of sophomore Isabella Labrada gave the Hawks a 22-15 lead and Hartford went on to take the second set to tie the match at one set each.
* The Mammoths flipped the score in the third set with an early run of nine straight points on the serve of junior
Lizzie Papalia that gave Amherst a lead it never relinquished, closing out the set with a kill by first-year
Chideraa Ngwadom to take a 2-1 set lead.
* The fourth set was the closest of the contest. After a 10-10 tie, the Hawks built a 16-13 lead before the Mammoths scored eight straight points on the serve of first-year
Bailey Reid to take a 21-16 lead. The Hawks fought back with five straight points on the serve of senior Kionah Thomas to tie the set at 22-22. After trading points, a kill from Richardson gave the Mammoths set point and sophomore
Charlotte Rasmussen ended the match with a kill.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* Richardson hit .345 and was in on 2 blocks to go with her career-high 13 kills. Rasmussen tallied 12 kills along with 2 blocks and an ace.
* Papalia recorded 29 digs, one of four Mammoths to tally double-digit digs as Cooper had 13, Thomas had 11 and Hamasaki had 10.
* Cooper provided 27 assists in the match.
* Quraishi starred for the Hawks, hitting .340 with 23 kills and 10 digs.
