Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Third-period barrage helps #3 Mammoths to 17th consecutive win, 7-1, on Senior Day

AMHERST, Mass. -- Trailing 1-0 after one period Saturday, Amherst College women's ice hockey coach Jeff Matthews told his team to take a breath, settle down and play their game.

And did they listen. The Mammoths scored seven unanswered goals in the final two periods Saturday en route to a 7-1 Senior Day win over Bowdoin at Orrk Rink. It was the 17th consecutive victory for the #3 ranked Mammoths, who improved to 18-1-0 overall and 11-1--0 in conference play.

Bowdoin fell to 7-11-1 overall and 2-9-0 in the NESCAC.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* The day began with a celebration of the 2023 Senior Class -- Avery Flynn, Leslie Schwartz, Kate Pohl, and Carley Daly -- but the party didn't get started until the second period. The Mammoths tied the game only 44 seconds into the second stanza. Flynn got the play started from deep in her zone with a pass along the left boards to Pohl, who quickly flipped it to Maeve Reynolds. Reynolds skated into the Bowdoin zone and delivered a crisp pass to Rylee Glennon, who was able to get enough of her stick to direct the puck on net, where it was saved. Pohl, who had followed the play after her breakout pass in her own zone, was rewarded for the hustle when she gathered in the rebound and flipped a backhand shot high into the unattended net for her 10th goal of the season.

* Jayna Park gave the Mammoths a 2-1 lead just 2 minutes and 15 seconds later. The sophomore sent a pass back to the point for Schwartz, whose shot was wide of the net, but hard enough to carom right to Alyssa Xu slightly behind the Bowdoin goal on the left side. Xu collected the puck and fired a shot that was saved but not controlled. Park, who had followed the play into the front of the goal following her initial pas, was on the doorstep to tap in the loose rebound.

Up 2-1, as the third period began, the Mammoths stepped on the gas. With 5:11 gone and the Mammoths on the power play, Anna Baxter picked up a loose puck behind and to the right of the Bowdoin goal. She swung around back through the face-off circle, deked past a Bowdoin defender, and once in the slot, wristed a shot on net that eluded the goalie for a 3-1 lead.

* It was 4-1 just 50 seconds later after Ellie DeCarlo passed the puck from deep in the right corner back to Kelsey Stewart at the right point. Stewart fired a low shot on goal that Reynolds was able to get a stick on, re-directing past the goalie for her 10th goal of the season.

* Amherst put the game away with three goals over the final 5:53 of the game. Pohl had a power-play goal, her second score of the game, and that was followed by goals from Glennon and Mary Thompson

BY THE NUMBERS:

* Amherst outshot Bowdoin 49-19 in the game. Dani Marquez made 42 saves for the Polar Bears before coming out late in the contest. First-year Natalie Stott made 18 saves for Amherst to improve to 17-1-0 on the season.

* 4 players had 3 points in the win. Pohl had 2 goals and 1 assist. Reynolds and Glennon had 1 goal and 2 assists and Schwartz finished with 3 assists in the game.
