#3 Mammoths slide by Polar Bears, 4-3

AMHERST, Mass. -- First-year Gretchen Dann scored twice Friday night while Anna Baxter added two assists as the #3-ranked Amherst College women's hockey team skated past conference foe Bowdoin, 4-3, for its 16th consecutive victory.

The Mammoths improved to 17-1-0 with the win, 10-1-0 in conference play, while Bowdoin fell to 7-10-1 on the season. The two teams are back at it Saturday with a 3 p.m. puck drop again at Orr Rink.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* The Mammoths jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a goal at 1:26 in the first period. Avery Flynn carried flat across from the low left boards. Flynn took an initial shot, collected her own rebound, and continued across for another quick shot and goal.

* After Bowdoin tied the game later in the first on a score from Peyton Mulhern, two second-period scores gave the Mammoths a 3-1 lead. Again, the Mammoths scored early with a goal two minutes in. Leslie Schwartz wrapped around the back of the net and made a short pass to Gretchen Dann. Dann slid a shot through the pads of Dani Marquez.

* Senior Carley Daly made it 3-1 with a beautiful short-handed goal with 6:34 remaining in the second stanza. Daley's speed allowed her to race onto a clear from Baxter at mid-ice and skate in alone on Marquz, beating her through the five-hole for a two-goal advantage.

* It was 3-2 in the third when Dann's second goal all but ended it. Dann teed up a shot from the left point that threaded between the right skate of Marquez and the near post.

BY THE NUMBERS:

* Amherst first-year goaltender Natalie Stott made 22 saves in the victory. Marquez finished with 35 for the Polar Bears.

* The three Bowdoin goals snapped an 11-game streak in which the Mammoths allowed one goal or less.

* Amherst won 29 of 48 face-offs in the contest, with Baxter winning 13 of 18 and Maeve Reynolds taking 9 of 14.
