MIDDLETOWN, Conn. --
Matt Toporowski scored 37 seconds into overtime Friday night, lifting the Amherst College men's hockey team to a 2-1 win over rival Wesleyan at Spurrier-Snyder Rink.
The NESCAC-leading Mammoths improved to 12-3-2 overall and 10-1-0 in the conference. Wesleyan fell to 11-4-2 overall, 7-2-2 in conference play. Amherst is at Trinity Saturday for a 4 p.m. game.
Amherst captured the 2022-23 Little Championship with the win, having defeated Williams once and the Bantams twice on the season.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* The Mammoths took advantage of a Wesleyan turnover in the Mammoths zone as overtime began. Toporowski picked up the puck and zipped a cross-ice pass to
Josh Burke, who crossed the Wesleyan blue line and then sent the disc back to Toporowski, who had raced ahead of all Cardinal skaters. Toporowski skated in on the Wesleyan goal and beat Cardinal goaltender Eric Voloshin with a backhand shot for the victory. It was Toporowski's team-leading 9th goal of the season and his second game-winning overtime goal this campaign.
* After two periods of scoreless hockey, the Mammoths were first to get on the board as
Quinton Fox sprung
Ryan Tucker on a shorthanded opportunity 7-plus minutes into the frame. With an odd-man rush going the other way, Tucker shot to shoot on
Erik Voloshin who appeared to have made an initial stop but the puck trickled through her shoulder and over the line.
* A power-play goal by Weslean's Colin Cobb tied the game just 46 seconds later.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* Wesleyan owned a 32-19 advantage in shots with
Alex Wisco's 31 saves keeping Amherst in the game. Voloshin made 17 in net for the Cardinals.
* They were six penalties called in the game, five against the Mammoths.
