MIDDLETOWN, Conn. -- Third-period power-play goals from
Leslie Schwartz and
Maeve Reynolds allowed the Amherst College women's hockey team to post a 3-1 victory over conference rival Wesleyan at the Spurrier-Snyder Rink Saturday.
It was the 15th consecutive win for the Mammoths, a new program record eclipsing the 2015-16 team which won 14 in a row. Amherst is now 16-1-0 overall and 9-1-0 in conference play. Wesleyan fell to 9-6-1 overall, and 3-5-0 in conference play.
Amherst is off until Friday, January 27th, when it hosts Bowdoin at Orr Rink. Puck drop is 7 p.m.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* Wesleyan scored as time expired in the second period, tying the game 1-1 after senior
Avery Flynn's first goal of the season had given the Mammoths a 1-0 lead with 6:20 remaining in the period.
* Amherst took advantage of an early power-play opportunity in the third stanza.
Rylee Glennon took a shot from the high slot that was saved by Wesleyan goalie rei Halloran, but the rebound was not controlled and bounced off to the right side of the crease, Schwartz swooped in from the blue line and buried the rebound in the right side of the goal.
* The Mammoths made it 3-1 2:12 later. Again with a skater-up situation.
Emily Hohmann controlled the puck at the right point and slid the disc to her left for teammate
Mary Thompson, who quickly threw it on goal where it was initially stopped by Halloran. Reynolds was right there though and poked it past the goalie for the two-goal advantage.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* Amherst had a 43-14 advantage in shots on goal in the game. The Mammoths went 2 for 5 on power-play opportunities.
* First-year Amherst goaltender
Natalie Stott made 13 saves in the victory while Halloran finished with 40.
* The Mammoths won 42 of 67 face-offs in the game. Reynolds won 19 of the 30 she drew.
Anna Baxter won 10 of 13.
* Amherst has now allowed just one goal or less to its opponents for 11 consecutive games.
