Camels edge Mammoths on final relay for 143-137 dual meet victory

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Amherst men's swimming and diving team won six events but fell by a 143-137 margin in a dual meet with NESCAC rival Connecticut College that came down to the final relay on Saturday at the Lott Natatorium.

The Camels, ranked eighth in the Northeast-North Region in the latest CSCAA Division III poll, and the Mammoths, ranked ninth in the region, both emerged from the meet with 4-2 records in the dual meet season.

The Mammoths are back in action on Saturday, Jan. 28, visiting MIT, ranked fourth in the nation, for a 1 p.m. dual meet.

MEET HIGHLIGHTS:

* Sophomore Tor Metelmann led an Amherst sweep of the top four spots in the 100-yard breaststroke. Metelmann touched in 58.90 seconds to win the event for the third time this season.

* Swimming the 1650-yard freestyle for the first time in his career, sophomore Gabriele Lunardi won the longest race of the day with a time of 16:11.47.

* Junior Tyler Knightly was a winner in the 200-yard freestyle, touching in 1:45.21 for his second win of the season in the event.

* Sophomore Jaden Olson won the 100-yard backstroke in 51.71, his fourth 100 back win in as many starts this season.

* First-year Jonah Luetke was the winner of the 200-yard backstroke for the fourth time this season, clocking a time of 1:54.60.

* First-year Michael Jang won the 200-yard breaststroke for the third time this season with a time of 2:10.32 to finish just ahead of Metelmann.

* The meet was decided in the final event, the 200-yard freestyle relay. The Camels had just a one-point lead entering the event, meaning that the winner of the relay would clinch the meet. Conn's quartet of Sean Geisler, Justin Finkel, Mitchell Lockwood and Julien Legros touched first with a time of 1:24.86, just ahead of Amherst's mark of 1:25.64.
