Golden Flyers skate to 2-1 win to snap Mammoths winning streak

AMHERST, Mass. – Twin brothers Anthony and Liam Quinlivan each scored goals to lift Nazareth College to a 2-1 win over the Amherst College men's ice hockey team on Monday night at Orr Rink.

The Golden Flyers improved to 8-4 with the win, while the Mammoths saw their four-game winning streak snapped and fell to 6-2-1.

Amherst and Nazareth square off again at Orr Rink tomorrow (Tuesday, Jan. 3) at 3 p.m.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* After a scoreless first period, the Golden Flyers got on the board early in the second period when Anthony Quinlivan found the puck in traffic in front of the goal and netted his first goal of the season.

* Liam Quinlivan doubled Nazareth's lead early in the third period, getting past the defense to receive a cross-ice pass from linemate Michael DiSchiavi and finding the back of the net for his second goal of the season.

* The Mammoths got on the board late in the third period as first-year winger Zachary Murray dropped a pass back for sophomore winger Ben Kuzma and Kuzma blasted a shot from the top of the left circle with 3:14 to go for his team-leading eighth goal of the season.

* The Mammoths pulled the goalie for an extra skater for the final 1:20 and a Nazareth penalty made it a 6-on-4 advantage for the final 58 seconds but Amherst was unable to find an equalizer.

BY THE NUMBERS:

* Kuzma's goal extended his point streak to eight games, with eight goals and five assists in that span. The sophomore winger leads the NESCAC with 13 points this season.

* The Mammoths were perfect on the penalty kill for the fifth straight game, keeping the Golden Flyers off the board for all three Nazareth power plays. Amherst's only power-play opportunity came in the final 58 seconds of the game.

* Both teams recorded 17 shots on goal as Nazareth sophomore goalie Matt Sayles made 16 saves to earn the win.
