AMHERST, Mass. --
Matt Toporowski scored twice -- including the tying goal in the third period -- as the Amherst College men's hockey team rallied to tie Nazareth College 2-2 Tuesday afternoon at Orr Rink.
The Mammoths moved to 6-2-2 with the outcome, while Nazareth is now 8-4-1. Amherst is at conference rival Bowdoin College Friday at 7.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* The first period ended in a scoreless tie despite the Mammoths creating a 16-4 advantage in shots on goal. Each team had one full power-play opportunity, but neither team could take advantage of the extra skater.
* Toporowski gave the Mammoths a 1-0 lead just 53 seconds into the second stanza, taking advantage of a 4-on-4 situation.
Max Thiessen fed him the puck as he skated into the Golden Flyer zone, letting loose with a shot as he entered the left circle. The shot was wide, but took a crazy carom off the boards behind the goal, went up into the air and between two defenders, and back onto the blade of Toporowski, who cut to his right and flipped a backhand past a startled goalkeeper.
* The Golden Flyers scored two goals before the period would end, however, taking a 2-1 lead into the third period on goals by Tobias Logan and Lim Quinlivan.
* Amherst tied it at 4:07 in the final period.
Spencer Kimball fired a shot from the left point that found its way through a crowd and deflected off
Bobby Luca in front of the goal. Once again, Toporowski made the most of being in the right place at the right time as the puck fell into the unmanned slot. He pounced on it, cut to his right again, and lifted a backhand into the top shelf on the right side of the net.
* Amherst goalie
Connor Leslie was sensational down the stretch, making several key saves in the final minutes coming up with five more in the five-minute overtime session.
*
Josh Burke nearly won the game for the Mammoths in the final seconds, swooping into the Golden Flyer goal from his right and wristing a shot off the glove of Nazareth goalie Raphael Provencher. He picked up his rebound and lofted a shot attempt over the goalie that appeared as if it may float into the goal, but Provencher wielded his stick like a baseball bat and somehow deflected the disk up into the air just beyond the goal where it fell on the top of it.
