MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Sophomore
Eliza Cardwell won both the 60m hurdles and the long jump as the Amherst College women's track and field team opened the indoor season with a second-place finish at the Little Three Championships on Saturday at Wesleyan's Bacon Field House.
Williams won the title, tallying 153 points to beat out Amherst's 124.5 points.
The Mammoths continue the indoor season next Saturday (Jan. 21), traveling to Vermont to compete in the Middlebury Winter Classic.
MEET HIGHLIGHTS:
* Cardwell led an Amherst sweep of the top three spots in the 60m hurdles. The reigning New England Division III champion clocked a time of 9.14 seconds, qualifying her to defend her New England title. Junior
Trintje Nydam was second with a personal-best time of 9.48, edging first-year
Arissa Grace McGowan, who posted a 9.49 in her collegiate debut. All three qualified for the New England Division III Championships.
* Cardwell also defended her Little Three title in the long jump with a leap of 5.44m to qualify for the New England Division III Championships.
* Sophomore
Anaya Thomas won the triple jump with a mark of 10.44m for her first collegiate track and field win in her first indoor attempt at the triple jump. Thomas also finished second in the high jump, qualifying for New Englands with a personal-best mark of 1.58m.
* Senior
Mary Kate McGranahan won the 3000m race, crossing in 10:22.95 to set a personal best and qualify for the New England Division III Championships with her first collegiate win in the event. Sophomore
Claire Callon also qualified for New Englands in the event with a personal-best time of 10:38.85 to finish third.
* Junior
Bethany Martin won the weight throw with a toss of 11.27m for her first collegiate win in the event.
