AMHERST, Mass. -- Senior captain
Leslie Schwartz scored for the third straight game while
Natalie Stott made 12 saves Saturday as the #4 Amherst College women's hockey team ran its win streak to 12 games with a 3-1 decision -- and a weekend sweep of -- conference rival Connecticut College at Orr Rink.
The Mammoths, front-runners of the NESCAC, improved to 13-1-0 overall and 8-1-0 in NESCAC play. They are back at home Tuesday for a 7 p.m. contest against non-conference opponent Norwich University.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* Amherst took a 1-0 lead with 7:13 left in the first period. With a power-play opportunity winding down,
Rylee Glennon sent a pass from the left circle out to the high slot where
Avery Flynn was stationed. Flynn one-timed the pass through a crowd in front of the goal that was saved, but Schwartz pounced on the rebound and buried a shot into the open right side of the net for the lead only two seconds after the man-up chance had expired.
* The Mammoths doubled their lead 6:36 into the second period when
Emily Hohmann sent a breakout pass to
Alyssa Xu from deep in her own zone. Xu received the puck around the Mammoths' blue line and sprinted through the neutral zone. Once inside the Camels' zone, she made a nice move on a defender to create a 1-on-1 opportunity with the goalie, but her shot was saved. The rebounded bounded out to the left f the goal where
Jayna Park picked it up and quickly put a backhand shot into the open left side of the goal.
* Amherst kept the pressure on and it paid off with 6:56 remaining in the second stanza when Marlee-Eve Marleau won the puck back in the right corner of the Camels' zone and fired a pass back to Flynn at the left point. This time
Gretchen Dann fired a shot that reached the goal, where it was saved, but once again the rebound was not controlled, going directly to
Anna Baxter, who fired a shot into the goal for the three-goal advantage.
* Stott faced only five shots through the first 40 minutes and saved them all. She faced eight shots in the final frame and came up with a pair of beautiful saves to keep the Camels off the board. She had seven saves in the third period alone.
