Defending champ Panthers pull away for 3-1 win over #11 Mammoths

AMHERST, Mass. – A pair of goals on either side of halftime broke a 1-1 tie and lifted four-time defending national champion Middlebury College to a 3-1 win over the Amherst College field hockey team in the NESCAC opener for both teams on Saturday at Hill Field. Sophomore Amy Griffin, the reigning NESCAC Rookie of the Year, tallied a goal and an assist to lead the Panthers.

The top-ranked Panthers improved to 2-0 on the young season with their 32nd straight win. The Mammoths fell to 1-1 and return to action on Tuesday (Sept. 13), hosting Keene State at 6:30 p.m.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* Middlebury sophomore Katherine Lantzy put the Panthers on the scoreboard just 1:17 into the contest with her first collegiate goal.

* The Mammoths leveled the score 27 seconds into the second period when sophomore Kat Mason connected on a pass to junior Muffie Mazambani who slipped the ball past a diving Middlebury goalie for her second goal in as many games this season.

* The Panthers reclaimed the lead with 1:16 to go before halftime when junior Caroline Segal scored her first goal of the season on a rebound.

* Middlebury added another goal 3:23 into the third quarter when Griffin was awarded a penalty stroke and converted for her second goal in as many games this season.

BY THE NUMBERS:

* Middlebury held a 13-9 advantage in shots and a 6-5 edge in shots on goal. Senior goalie Grace Harlan made four saves to earn the win.

* The Panthers were awarded six penalty corners while the Mammoths earned three, but none of the goals resulted from penalty corners.
