HARTFORD, Conn. -- Six different Mammoths had two hits each Friday, but if was not enough as the Amherst College baseball team dropped a 14-8 decision to Middlebury as NESCAC Championship Weekend began at Trinity College.
Amherst fell to 16-17-1 with the loss and will face Hamilton (18-16), a 6-4 loser to Colby Friday, in an elimination game at 10:30 a.m.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* Amherst took a 1-0 lead in the first when
Ryan McIntyre led off with a single and
Jack McDermott doubled him to third. After an out
Luke Padian's groundout scored McIntyre for the lead.
* After the Panthers tied it with a run in their first, one-out singles in the second by
Jack Dove and
Christian Fagnant helped put the Mammoths back on top when Dove scored on a wild pitch.
* Down 6-2 after a five-run Middlebury second, Amherst scored three times in the third to make it 6-5. With two outs and nobody on, Padian reached on an error and
Chris Murphy legged out an infield hit.
Daniel Qin lined an RBI-single to left center and Dove followed with a two-run single to bring the Mammoths back within one.
* The Panthers answered with four runs in the third and three in the fourth to build a 13-5 lead after four innings. Qin and Dove walked, and with two outs, Boyle had an RBI-single and McIntyre drove home two with a double.
* McIntyre, Murphy, Murphy, Qin, Dove and Fagnant each had two hits in the game for Amherst, which had 14 total.
* Jacob Ribitizki took the loss, falling to 4-3 on the season.
