Mammoths' season concludes with 15-8 loss to Hamilton in NESCAC Tournament

HARTFORD, Conn. -- The Amherst College baseball team saw its season come to an end Saturday as it dropped a 15-8 decision to Hamilton in the non-advancing team bracket of the NESCAC Championship Tournament being held at Trinity College.

As has been the case of late the Mammoths hit, scoring eight runs on 12 hits, but it was not enough as Hamilton countered wth 15 runs, building a 12-1 lead after the first 3 1/2 innings. Typical of this Mammoth team, they would no quietly into the good night, scoring three times in the bottom of the ninth with two outs before a fly out with runners on first and second extinguished the rally.

Amherst cioncludes its season with a 16-18-1 record.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* Down 9-0 heading into the bottom of the third, Amherst got on the board when Ryan McIntyre laced a one-out single and Jack McDermott followed with a double that sent him to third. McIntyre scored on Jackson Reydel's groundout.

* Down 12-1 going to the bottom of the fourth, the Mammoths continued to fight, scoring three times to cut their deficit to eight. With two outs, Jack Dove reached on an error. Christian Fagnant singled to right and Jack Boyle followed with an RBI-single to center to make it 12-2. McIntyre followed with a blast into the gap in right-center field, legging out a triple that scored Fagnant and Boyle to make it 12-4.

* In the Amherst seventh, McDermott walked and went to third on a double from sophmore Luke Padian. Chris Murphy scored McDermott with a groundout.

* Down 15-5 entering the ninth, the first two Mammoths were retired before Reydel and Padian smacked back-to-back doubles. Murphy was hit by a pitch and Daniel Qin reached on an error that loaded the bases. Dove then ripped a two-run single to center before the final out was recorded.

* McIntyre, McDermott, Reydel, Padian and Dove each collected two hits for the Mammoths in the defeat.

* Amherst starter Nick Giattino took the loss, finishing his season at 5-4.
