AMHERST, Mass. – The Mammoths won four events and three school records fell as the Amherst College women's track and field team made the short trek across town to compete at the UMass Outdoor Invitational against a field of Division I athletes on Sunday at the UMass Track and Field Complex.
Junior
Sophia Wolmer won the 5000m, first-year
Julia Zacher won the high jump, first-year
Julia Schor won the 1500m and junior
Mary Kate McGranahan won the steeplechase.
New Amherst records were set by senior
Anna Madden in the 400m, first-year
Jordan Hecker in the pole vault and sophomore
Bethany Martin in the hammer.
The Mammoths, the only Division III team competing at the meet, finished third of six teams with 119.5 points in the opening meet of the outdoor season for all but one javelin thrower who competed last week. Host Massachusetts won the meet with 274 points.
The Mammoths return to action on Saturday (April 9), hosting the Amherst Spring Fling, their only home meet of the season. Throwing and jumping events begin at 11 a.m. with action on the track starting at noon.
MEET HIGHLIGHTS:
* The Mammoths took the top two spots in the 5000m as Wolmer crossed in 17:07.44 and first-year
Sidnie Kulik clocked in at 17:13.39, both qualifying times for the NEICAAA Outdoor Championships.
* Zacher cleared 1.66m in the high jump to win the event and qualify for the NEICAAA Outdoor Championships. Classmate
Anaya Thomas tied for sixth in the event, matching her collegiate-best mark of 1.51m. Zacher and Thomas both qualified for the New England Division III Outdoor Championships in the 100m hurdles as Zacher was eighth in 16.52 and Thomas was ninth in 16.55.
* Schor won the 1500m in 4:41.50, qualifying for the New England Division III Championships. Classmate
Sylvan Wold also scored in the event, taking eighth place at 4:54.40.
* McGranahan was the lone entrant in the 3000m steeplechase, her first collegiate start in the event, and navigated the course in 11:41.15 to qualify for the New England Division III Championships.
* Madden ran the 400m dash in 57.36 to break the previous Amherst record of 57.39 that was set by Victoria Hensley '16 in 2016. She finished third in the event and qualified for the NEICAAA Championships while senior
Juanita Jaramillo was fifth with a personal-best 58.04 and first-year
Casie Eifrig was ninth in 1:00.46, qualifying all three Mammoths for the New England Division III Championships.
* Hecker cleared 3.40m to set the new Amherst record in the pole vault, finishing fourth and qualifying for the New England Division III Championships. Sophomore
Mia Bawendi, the previous record-holder, also qualified for New Englands, clearing 3.52m to finish seventh, and first-year
Payton Sorensen cleared 2.95m to finish ninth with all three marks besting the previous Amherst record of 2.91m.
* Martin threw the hammer 42.73m to break the Amherst record that has stood since 2010, when Jordan Roehl '12 recorded a mark of 40.97m. Martin finished sixth and qualified for the New England Division III Championships.

Muffie Mazambani qualified for the New England Division III Championships in both the long jump and the triple jump. She finished third in the triple jump with a mark of 11.15m. Thomas also qualified for New Englands with her fourth-place mark of 10.91m in her first collegiate start in the event and junior
Annelise Romero also scored for the Mammoths with her eighth-place mark of 10.37m.
* Three Mammoths qualified for the New England Division III Championships in the 400m hurdles, all making their first collegiate start in the event. Junior
Ava Tillman finished fourth in 1:06.76 in her first collegiate hurdles race. Sophomore
Trintje Nydam was just behind, clocking in at 1:06.89, and first-year
Artis Phillips finished in 1:08.50 to claim ninth place.

Ava Zielinski qualified for the New England Division III Championship in the 800m run with her sixth-place time of 2:19.21.
* Junior
Amerley Lokko qualified for the New England Division III Championship in the 100m dash with a time of 12.70 that was good for seventh place in her first collegiate race in the event.
* Two 4x400m relay teams scored top-eight finishes for the Mammoths. Madden, Jaramillo, Eifrig and sophomore
Nicole Barbaro finished second in 4:00.38. Tillman, Zielinski and seniors
Sam Tichelaar and
Isabelle Lobo came in fifth with a time of 4:13.42.
