Ribitzki hurls Mammoths to split with Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY, VT. -- Junior Jacob Ribitzki fired a 9-inning complete-game 4-hitter in the nightcap of a twin bill with NESCAC West Division rival Middlebury College Saturday, helping the Mammoths gain a split with a 7-2 victory.

Middlebury escaped game one Saturday with a 5-4 decision. The Mammoths are now 10-16-1 overall and 2-7 in divisional play. They host M.I.T. in a non-conference game Sunday at 1 p.m.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS:

* Amherst gave Ribitzki an early lead with two runs in the first and two more in the second. Ryan McIntyre led off the game with a single and, one out later, Jackson Reydel walked. An error put Luke Padian on first to load the bases for Chris Murphy, who also reached on an error as McIntyre scored the game's first run. Daniel Qin lofted a sacrifice fly to the outfield to score Reydel for a 2-0 lead.

* In the second, Jack Boyle reached on an infield single and took second on an error and then third on a wild pitch. McInty're second single in two innings brought him home with the Mammoths' third run. McIntyre stole second, taking third on a throwing error, and scored on McDermott's sacrifice fly.

* In the Amherst 5th, McDermott smacked an opposite-field home run to left, his first round-tripper of the season. In the fifth, Jack Dove's double scored Murphy, who had reached on an error. In the eighth, Christian Fagnant launched a solo home run to right, his second home run of the season.

* Ribitzki had no troubles through seven innings. He retired the Panthers 1-2-3 in the first, allowed a lead-off double in the second, then retired an amazing 18 consecutive batters. He recorded five of his seven strikeouts in that span. After running into some trouble in the eighth, he finished strong with a 1-2-3 ninth inning to complete his masterful performance and up his record to 3-2.

* Amherst had 10 hits. Boyle was 2 for 4 with a run scored and McIntyre 2 for 5 with an RBI and two runs scored.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS:

* The Mammoths jumped out to a 3-0 early thanks to a two-run Qin single in the first and an RBI-double by McDermott in the second. But they trailed 5-3 entering the top of the seventh when McDermott drew a lead-off walk. Reydel then hit a grounder that forced McDermott at second for the first out, but a bad throw allowed Reydel to reach second. Luke Padian made it 5-4 with a double to right. After the second out, pinch-runner Nick Addison advanced to third on a passed ball, but he would not score as a strikeout ended the game,

* Nick Giattino (3-3) took the loss, going all six innings and allowing seven hits and five runs, four earned, while walking three and striking out two.

* The Mammoths had seven hits. McDermott and Qin were each 2 for 3 in the defeat.
