Mammoths swimming for NESCAC Championships this weekend at Colby

2/16/2022 6:14:00 PM

Two years ago, Scott Romeyn '22 was set to compete in the NCAA Division III Championships after earning All-NESCAC honors in six events at the 2020 NESCAC Championships, but the national championships were abruptly canceled with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and pools remained shuttered for the entire next season. This weekend, the NESCAC Men's Swimming and Diving Championships return with a new crop of title contenders meeting at a new venue to race for conference crowns and chase times that will earn a ticket to the national championships.

The Amherst College men's swimming and diving team finished third the last time this championship was held in 2020 and will join the rest of the NESCAC this weekend on the campus of Colby College in Waterville, Maine, which is hosting the meet for the first time with pool records expected to be set in nearly every event at Colby's new aquatics center. The Mammoths will be seeking their first NESCAC championship as they try to dethrone two-time defending champion Williams.

The Mammoths enter the championship ranked 17th in the nation and 5th in the Northeast-North Region in the latest CSCAA Division III Poll after posting a 6-1 record in dual meets.

Romeyn earned All-NESCAC honors in six events at the 2020 championships: the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle, the 200-yard and 400-yard freestyle relay, and the 200-yard and 400-yard medley relay. This season, Romeyn has posted an NCAA B cut time of 20.61 in the 50 free, an event in which he set the Amherst school record at the 2019 NCAA Championships. He enters this weekend's championship seeded second in the 50 free and third in the 100 free.

The Mammoths also have a third seed in the 800-yard freestyle relay, the race that will kick off the meet on Thursday night. Amherst has not raced in an 800 free relay this season but the top 200 free times of Romeyn and sophomores Will Taylor, Tyler Knightly and Justin Papagelis are all amongst the top 30 in the NESCAC.

The 800 free relay kicks off the meet on Thursday (Feb. 17) at 7 p.m. with three full days of competition to follow. Trials will begin at 10 a.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday with finals beginning at 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 5:30 p.m. on Sunday. Live results will be available for each day of competition and a live broadcast will be available online and on the NSN Sports app for Roku, AppleTV and Amazon Fire devices.
