Mammoths remain unbeaten in dual meet season with 160-98 win over Dutchmen

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Sophomore Tor Metelmann swept the breaststroke races as the Amherst College men's swimming and diving team remained perfect on the dual meet season with a 160-98 win over Union College on Saturday afternoon at Union's Alumni Gym Pool.

The Mammoths, ranked ninth in the Northeast-North region in the latest CSCAA Division III poll, improved to 4-0 while the Dutchmen fell to 0-4.

The Mammoths are back in action on Saturday, Jan. 7, hosting arch-rival Williams at 4 p.m. at Pratt Pool in a dual meet that will decide the Little Three Championship.

MEET HIGHLIGHTS:

* Metelmann led an Amherst sweep of the top three spots in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 59.36 and captured the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:12.96.

* First-year Jonah Luetke, junior Liam Loveless, sophomore Jaden Olson and senior Christian Moy opened the meet by teaming to win the 200-yard medley relay in 1:36.91 as the Mammoths claimed the top three spots.

* Luetke went on to win the 200-yard backstroke in 1:55.16, his third win in the event in as many collegiate starts.

* Junior Tyler Knightly was a winner in his first collegiate start in the 1000-yard freestyle, clocking a time of 9:58.77 as the Mammoths captured the top four positions.

* First-year Henry LeCates made his first collegiate start in the 200-yard freestyle and led an Amherst sweep of the top three spots with a time of 1:46.85.

* Junior Justin Papagelis earned his first win of the season with a time of 53.96 in the 100-yard backstroke.

* Sophomore Gabriele Lunardi posted a season-best time of 1:56.95 to win the 200-yard butterfly.

* Sophomore Andrew Bernstein won the 50-yard freestyle in 21.95 seconds for his first collegiate win in the splash and dash.

* Junior Will Taylor finished atop a pack of four Mammoths in the top spots of the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 48.34 for his first collegiate win in the event.
