MIDDLEBURY, VT. --
Ellie DeCarlo's first goal of the season snapped a 2-2 tie and was part of a three-goal third period for the 11th-ranked Amherst College women's hockey team, which snapped #3 Middlebury's 21-game win streak at its own Chip Keynon Arena with a 4-2 come-from-behind victory Friday night.
The Mammoths improved to 4-2-0 overall and 2-1-0 in conference play while Middlebury fell to 4-2-0 overall and 2-1-0 in the NESCAC. The two teams will meet again Saturday for a 3 p.m. puck drop.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* The Panthers took a 2-1 lead with 4:55 elapsed in the final stanza.
Cece Ziegler sent a pass from the top of the left circle to Vira on the right, before
Molly MacQueen redirected Vira's slap shot into the goal.
* Less than two minutes later the Mammoths found the equalizer.
Alejandra Ubarri made a nice play to win the puck back just inside the center red line and banged a puck past a Panther defender to
Maeve Reynolds, who broke into the Panthers' zone 2-on-1 with
Carley Daly. Reynolds slide a pass across the slot to Daly, who drew the defender and slid a pass back to Reynolds, who deftly used her skate to get the puck on her blade and backhand a shot into the goal with 13:50 remaining in the game.
* Amherst took a 3-2 lead with 8:13 remaining in the period.
Alyssa Xu won a puck over on the left boards, skated into the circle and fired a shot that was saved. The rebound went out to Ubarri just inside the top of the right circle and one-time a shot on goal that DeCarlo got her blade on to re-direct into the lower left-hand corner of the goal.
* The Mammoths iced the win with 1:01 left. Middlebury pulled its goalie with 1:17 to go for the extra skater. Daly stole the puck at her own blue line skated alone to the Panthers' blue line and fired a puck into the empty goal to account for the -2 score.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* Reynolds scored twice in the game for Amherst, including her second short-handed goal in two games in the first period, giving the Mammoths a 1-0 lead.
* Amherst out shot Middlebury, 31-12, in the game and 16-7 in the decisive third period. First-year Amherst goalkeeper
Natalie Stott made 10 saves in the victory.
* The loss was the first for the Panthers in Kenyon Arena since March 8, 2020, ending a 21-home game winning streak.
