MIDDLEBURY, VT. --
Natalie Stott made 24 saves Saturday and four different skaters scored as the 11th-ranked Amherst College women's hockey rallied from a two-goal deficit to defeat #3-ranked Middlebury 4-2 and complete a weekend sweep of its NESCAC rival at the Chip Keynon Arena.
The Mammoths, who received goals from
Jayna Park,
Anna Baxter,
Carley Daly and
Ellie DeCarlo, improved to 5-1-0 on the season while Middlebury slipped to 4-3-0. Amherst is back in action Friday for an away contest at Johnson @ Wales in Providence, R.I. Puck drop is 6:30 p.m.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* Amherst found itself trailing the #3 panthers in their own rink 2-0 within the first 5 minutes of play in th first period.
* Before the stanza ended, the Mammoths had rallied to tie things, 2-all. First,
Jayna Park made a great play, picking up a rebound behind the Middlebury goal, circling back out to the top of te blue line and firing a strong wrister from the center of the blue line that beat the Middlebury goalie to make it 2-1.
* Amherst tied it 2-2 with 2:21 remaining in the second period.
Avery Flynn got the puck behind the panther goal and deftly slid a pass into the front of th crease where Baxter was stationed in the slot. She quickly back-handed a shot over te Panther goalie's pad and up under the crossbar for the tying tally.
* The Mammoths took the lead with 5:27 left in the third period. Daley collected a rebound in her own defensive zone and flew down the ice, sending a pass to teammate
Kate Pohl on the right side. Pohl skated into the Panther zone, drew the defender's attention, then returned the puck to Daley with a nice pass. Daley broke in on the goalie alone and beat her with a low shot for the lead. DeCarlo scored for the second straight game, added a key insurance goal with 16:46 to go in the third period, shoveling in a bid on the doorstep for a 4-2 lead.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* The Mammoths out shot Middlebury, 38-25, in the win. They also won 33 of 55 face-offs. Park won 11 of th 14 she took while Baxter won 12 of 18.
* Stott finished with 24 saves on 26 shots, including nine saves in the third period.
* There were 5 penalties in the game, 3 called against the Mammoths. Neither team managed a power-play goal.
