PURCHASE, N.Y. -- It was a day to remember for first-years
Natalie Stott and
Maeve Reynolds as they lifted the 11th-ranked Amherst College women's hockey team to a 1-0 win over Manhattanville College at the Playland Ice Casino Sunday.
Reynolds scored the games only goal, shorthanded no less, and Stott stopped all 13 shots she faced to post her second shutout in four starts this season. Amherst improved to 3-1-0 on the season while the Valiants slipped to 6-3-0. The Mammoths take on Middlebury College Friday at 7 p.m. in Middlebury, VT.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* Amherst outshot Manhattanville 13-2 in he opening period, but Valiants' goalie Franny Gerardi stood tall and the game remained scoreless after the opening 20 minutes. The Mammoths had a flurry of shot with 12 minutes to go in the period, including an opporunity from lesie Scwartz and two chances for Reynolds and one more for
Jayna Park, but all were deflected or stopped by Gerardi.
* The Mammoths actually upped the pressure in the middle stanza, taking an amazing 29 shots on goal in 20 minutes. Ironically, Manhattanville produced seven shots, including three on a power-play opportunity in the middle of the period. Stott was up to the task and stopped all three. Near the end of that Manattanville power-play, Reynolds was able to get her stick on a pass attempt and push the puck out towards center ice where she took off on a breakaway. The rookie beat Gerardi deked to her left and lofted a backhand shot over the pad for a 1-0 lead with 8:12 left in the period.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* Amherst won 28 of 48 face-offs and Reynolds won 11 of the 16 she took in the contest. Park won 8 of 12 and Baxter 9 of 15.
* Gerardi made a Manhattanville record 55 saves tying her own record set last season in an overtime game vs. Trinity.
