Mammoths rally for 3-3 tie at Geneseo

GENESEO, N.Y. -- Sophomore Ben Kuzma scored twice -- including the tying goal with 4:01 left in regulation -- as the Amherst College men's hockey team rallied from a three-goal deficit to tie SUNY-Geneseo, 3-3, Saturday afternoon.

The tie improved the Mammoths to 2-0-1 on the season while SUNY-Geneseo moved to 5-3-2. Amherst is home Sunday for a 3 p.m. puck drop vs. Babson College at Orr Rink.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* The Knights scored three times in the first period to build a three-goal lead after the first 20 minutes.

* Kuzma scored the only goal of the second period and put Amherst on the board. Evan Lichman won the puck back in the Mammoths' zone and tapped the puck over to Michael Pitts, who delivered a beautiful pinpoint pass to the blade of Kuzma as he cross the Knights' blue line. Kuzma fired a quick shot from the top of the circle that beat the goalie to the lower-left side of the goal.

* Tyler Bourque made it 3-2 early in the third period after some great work along the boards by Pitts and Quinton Fox. Fox won the puck behind the Geneseo goal and pushed a pass to Bourque stationed at the bottom of the left circle. Bourque's didn't have a great angle, but his shot caromed off the goalie and into the goal.

* Amherst converted a late power-play chance to tie the game. Joe Verkerke found Matt Toporowski down low and Toporowski fed Kuzma back at the top of the left circle. The sophomore's quick wrister found its way through a crowd in front of the net to tie the game, 3-3.

* The Mammoths had their chances to win the game in the 5-minute overtime session. Toporowski found himself in front of the net, but Knights' goalie Adam Harris made the save. Geneseo was assessed a holding penalty with 1:11 left in the OT period, but Harris again stopped Toporowski, this time from the middle of the zone between the circles.

BY THE NUMBERS:
