AMHERST, Mass. – Three first-period goals lifted Babson College to a 3-1 win over the Amherst College men's ice hockey team on Sunday afternoon at Orr Rink. First-year Will Holland scored his first collegiate goal and added an assist for the Beavers.
Amherst fell to 2-1-1 after its first loss of the season. Babson, ranked seventh in the nation in the latest USCHO Division III poll, improved to 7-2-1.
The Mammoths are back in action Friday (Dec. 2), hosting Wesleyan for a NESCAC clash at 7 p.m. in Orr Rink.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* The Beavers opened the scoring and took a lead they would never relinquish on the power play at the 5:56 mark in the first period when Holland took a shot from the blue line that changed direction in traffic and found the back of the net.
* Babson added two more goals 40 seconds apart midway through the first period. The Beavers gained possession at the red line and passed up to sophomore Matt Cormier, who fired a shot from the right circle to give the Beavers a 2-0 lead with his first goal of the season.
* The Beavers made it a 3-0 lead when they got the puck in the defensive goal and took off on an odd-man rush, with first-year Brendan Kennedy finding classmate Egan Schmitt, who skated right up the slot to pot his fourth goal of the season.
* The Mammoths got on the scoreboard in the second period when they broke up a Babson clear attempt and found sophomore
Ben Kuzma in open ice, who scored his fifth goal in the last three games with a wrister from the right side.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* The Mammoths held a 41-20 advantage in shots on goal as Babson netminder Nolan Hildebrand made 40 saves to earn the win.
* The Beavers went 1-for-4 on the power play while the Mammoths were 0-for-3.
