ARLINGTON, VA -- A decisive 15-2 second-half run by Lynchburg College sent the Amherst College men's basketball team to a 62-57 defeat at the Marymount Invitational.
The Mammoths fell to 1-1 on the season. They will face host Marymount in the final game of the invitational Sunday at 1 p.m.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* Amherst closed out the first half with a 7-2 run and led at the break, 27-23.
C.J. Mitchell ignited the run with a three-point with 6 minutes remaining that regained the lead for Amherst at 23-all. After Lynchburg tied the game again,
Will Scherer provided some timely defense with a block on one possession and a defensive rebound on the next.
Mohammed Alausa gave the Mammoths a 25-23 lead with a mid-range jumper with 2:08 to go. A defensive board from Christopher Hammond in the final minute of play led to a
Charlie Randall lay-up off a nice dish from
Michael Schretter and Amherst led by four at the half.Â
* The Mammoths extended that lead over the course of the first eight minutes in the second half, pushing it up to nine. Schretter and
Bobby Sommers came off the bench to provide a boost, combing to score 10 points in a 3:08 span that took a 35-30 lead and turned into a 45-36. advantage. A Schretter jumper in the paint off a feed from Sommers led to a lay-up from Schretter off a Sommers assist that gave the Mammoths that nine-point lead with 11:14 remaining in the game.Â
* It was all Lynchburg from that point however as that 15-2 run gave them a lead they would not relinquish. A pair of free throws from Cole Murphy gave Lynchburg a 48-47 lead, their first of the half, and then Kavon James nailed a three-pointer for a 51-47 lead.Â
BY THE NUMBERS:
* Two of the most eye-popping stats: Amherst had a 51-25 advantage on the glass. And Lynchburg committed only 4 turnovers to the Mammoths' 20 in the game.Â

Canin Reynolds led Amherst with 10 points. Schretter and Sommers scored 8 points each. Sommers added 4 rebounds and 3 assists. Vance Ryker and
C.J. Mitchell each had 6 points. Ryker added a team-high 8 rebounds.
Will Scherer also secured 8 rebounds.
