ARLINGTON, VA --
Canin Reynolds nailed a three-pointer from the top of the key with four seconds to go Sunday and
Ryker Vance came up with a block at the buzzer as the Amherst College men's basketball team defeated Marymount, 65-64, in the final game of the Marymount Invitational.
The Mammoths improved to 2-1 on the young season. They are at Babson for a 1 p.m. tip-off Wednesday.Â
Reynolds, who led the Mammoths with 17 points in the win, was named to the all-tournament team.Â
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* Amherst trailed 39-30 at the half Sunday as the Saints hit 50 percent (6 of 12) of their three-point attempts in the opening 20 minutes. Sophomore
Noah Helmke helped the Mammoths stay around with 10 points, including a pair of three-pointers.Â
* The Mammoths scored the first five points of the second half to cut their deficit to four points. Vance had a couple of big baskets to get Amherst going.Â
* Amherst's work on the glass began paying dividends. With 12:33 remaining, a Helmke trey tied the score 46-46. Over the final nine minutes of the game, the lead would change hands nine times and be tied on three occasions. Reynolds scored all of his 17 points throughout the final 14:42.Â
* A Helmke lay-up with 7:58 to go gave Amherst a 51-50 lead. Down one, Reynolds hit a three-pointer for a 53-51 lead with 6:45 to go. Behind by two, Reynolds hit a jumper to tie the game and
Michael Schretter had a lay-up off a
C.J. Mitchell assist for a 57-55 Amherst lead with 4:51 remaining.Â
* Amherst trailed 61-59 when Reynolds hit another trey for a 62-61 lead. Three made free throws over two possessions put the Saints back on top, 64-62.Â
* With 10 seconds to go, the Mammoths in-bounded the ball from underneath the Marymount basket. Vance made an acrobatic play to snare the pass, stay in bounds and deliver the ball to Reynolds at the top of the key. Reynolds calmly led a Sain defender to fly past him, stepped up to the three-point line, and nailed a trey with four seconds to go for the 65-64 lead.
*Marymount raced down the court for a lay-up attempt at the buzzer but Vance, trailing on the play exploded to the glass and blocked the shot as time expired.Â
BY THE NUMBERS:
* Reynolds went 6 for 11 from the floor, 4 of 6 from beyond the three-point line, for a team-high 17 points. Helmke finished with 15 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Vance notched 10 points and six rebounds. Schretter had 10 points, four rebounds, and two assists.Â
* For the second game in a row, the Mammoths had a big advantage on the glass, 46-27. They also managed nine steals in the game, forcing 14 Marymount turnovers.Â
