Sam Underwood added 12 as the Amherst College volleyball team defeated conference rival Bates, 3-1, at the Bobcats' Alumni Gymnasium.
After dropping the opening set 25-18, the Mammoths responded with three straight wins, 25-16, 25-17, and 25-15, to improve to 12-6 on the season and 6-3 in the conference. Amherst will conclude its regular-season schedule with a match at Colby Saturday beginning at 2 p.m.
MATCH HIGHLIGHTS:
* Down 1-0 in sets, the Mammoths never trailed in set two, building an early 13-5 lead en route to knotting the match, 1-1. Amherst led 3-0 quickly after two
Anaya Thomas kills and one Tilton kill on the first set serves of the match. A pair of additional Tilton kills extended that lead to 9-3. The Bobcats closed to 13-9 before
Kinsey Cronin took over with a kill and, after another Thomas kill, two service aces that made it 17-9 Mammoths. Late in the set Cronin had another kill off a Carly Copper set assist, and Underwood ended the set with an ace.Â
* In the crucial third set the Mammoths were down 11-9 before a quick 5-0 run changed the momentum of the evening. Cooper set up kills from Thomas and Tilton that tied the score, 11-11. Three straight attack errors from Bates off Cooper serves gave Amherst a three-point cushion. The Mammoths held a slim 17-15 lead before an Underwood kill and back-to-back aces from
Lani Uyeno made it 20-15. A big block from
Charlotte Rasmussen and Cronin got the Mammoths a key point before an attack error on Bates closed out the Mammoth's victory.Â
* The fourth and ultimately final set was tied 10-10 before a seven-point Mammoth run swung the momentum in their favor for good. A Tilton kill off an Uyeno assist ignited the run and
Katelyn Hamasaki then served six straight points, getting help from
Chloe Chanren, who had a kill and then a block assist with Underwood. A Hamasaki ace and a bookend kill by Tilton gave Amherst the 17-10 advantage. An Underwood kill and a Rasmussen kill set the stage for Underwood, who delivered an ace to end the set and the match.Â
