Mammoths sweep Mules to close regular season

WATERVILLE, Maine – Senior Caroline Tilton and first-year Charlotte Rasmussen each tallied 10 kills to lead the Amherst College volleyball team to a three-set win over Colby College on Saturday at the Alfond Athletics & Recreation Center.

The Mammoths posted a 25-16, 25-23, 25-13 scoreline for their fourth straight win. Amherst concludes the regular season at 13-6 overall and 7-3 in NESCAC play to finish tied for third in the conference standings. The Mules fell to 14-8 overall and 4-6 in NESCAC play, finishing tied for seventh.

The Mammoths earn the fourth seed in the upcoming NESCAC Tournament and will face defending champion Bowdoin, the fifth seed, in the quarterfinals on Friday (Nov. 4) at 7:30 p.m. at Wesleyan University.

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS:

* The Mammoths jumped out to a big early lead in the first set, taking a 7-2 lead and then reeling off seven straight points on the serve of senior Jacqueline Kortekaas to take a 14-4 lead. Amherst held off the Mules from there for a 25-16 win in the first set.

* The second set was a much tighter affair. After the Mammoths took a 9-4 lead and soon stretched it to 14-7, the Mules won five straight rallies to get back within two points. With Amherst on set point at 24-18, Colby scored five straight points before sophomore Anaya Thomas came through with the kill for Amherst that ended the second set at 25-23.

* The Mammoths took another early lead in the third set, winning the first five points on the serve of junior Carly Cooper and taking an 18-7 lead with another five-point run on Cooper's next rotation to the service area. Thomas and sophomore Kinsey Cronin combined for a block to end the match with a 25-13 third-set score to the Mammoths.

BY THE NUMBERS:

* Cooper led the Mammoths with 20 assists while senior Lani Uyeno tallied 14 digs and Cronin was involved in 4 total blocks.

* Junior Hannah Wyllie and first-years Sydney Bopp and L.J. Grant each tallied six kills for the Mules.
