Game Recap: Field Hockey |

#5 Mammoths clip Hamilton on late Maynard goal, 3-2

CLINTON, N.Y. -- Sophomore Sam Maynard scored two goals for the second game in a row Saturday, the second of which broke a 2-2 tie with 4 minutes and 27 remaining in the game, to help the #5th-ranked Amherst College field hockey team to its 10th straight victory with a 3-2 decision over Hamilton at the Continentals' Goodfriend Field.

Amherst improved to 12-2 overall and 7-2 overall in NESCAC play. The Mammoths conclude the regular season with an away game Tuesday versus Trinity College. That contest is slated to begin at 6 p.m.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* Hamilton score one goal in the third quarter and one in the fourth to erase a 2-0 Amherst lead. But, only 3:18 after the Continentals netted the equalizer, the Mammoths earned one of their 10 penalty corner opportunities. Muffie Mazambani inserted the ball to Sage Geyer, who slid a pass to her left to Abbey Kays. Kays pinpointed a second pass to Maynard, who fired a shot past the goalkeeper for the lead.

* The Mammoths took a 1-0 lead just 1:16 into the game off another penalty corner. Mazambani inserted to Kays, who rocketed a shot into the lower left-hand corner for the lead.

* A second first-quarter goal came when Justine Ligouri sent a beautiful pass through the Continentals' circle from the right side. It found Maynard alone all the way at the far left post and the sophomore did not miss re-directing the pass into an open goal for a 2-0 lead with 2:49 remaining in the quarter.

BY THE NUMBERS:

* Amherst had a 14-6 shot advantage, although a much slimmer 7-6 edge in shots on goal, in the game. The Mammoths created 10 penalty corner chances -- five in the fourth quarter alone -- to six from Hamilton.

* Sara Nidus made four saves in goal for Amherst, one in each quarter.
