#6 Trinity edges #4 Amherst with overtime strike, Mammoths clinch home field for NESCAC quarterfinal

HARTFORD, Conn. – Trinity graduate student Caelin Flaherty scored in overtime to lift Trinity College to a 2-1 win over the Amherst College field hockey team in a NESCAC clash between nationally ranked teams on Tuesday night at Sheppard Field.

Amherst's loss in the regular season finale for both teams snaps a 10-game winning streak for the Mammoths, who are ranked fourth in the nation in today's NFHCA Division III poll. Amherst and sixth-ranked Trinity each finish the regular season with identical records of 12-3 and at 7-3 in NESCAC play, the two squads finish the season in a three-way tie with Tufts for second place in the NESCAC standings. With head-to-head results as the tiebreaker, the Mammoths earn the fourth seed in the upcoming NESCAC Tournament and Amherst will host fifth-seeded Williams in the quarterfinals on Saturday (Oct. 29).

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* After a scoreless first half in which Amherst goalie Sara Nidus made five saves, the Bantams broke through early in the third quarter as junior Katrina Winfield sent a pass into traffic in the arc and classmate Demarest Janis knocked it in for her seventh goal of the season.

* With just over five minutes to go in the fourth quarter, Amherst tallied an equalizer. The Mammoths attacked in transition and lured the Trinity goalkeeper out of the cage while maintaining possession and controlling rebounds. Senior Natalie Hobbs sent the ball into a crowded arc where first-year Anna Aiello managed a shot to score the fourth goal of her rookie season.

* The Mammoths stopped several shots in overtime with sophomore Kat Mason making a defensive save and Nidus stopping the only penalty corner of the overtime period. The Bantams tallied the game-winner 8:13 into the extra frame as Flaherty gained possession and scored her seventh goal of the season.

BY THE NUMBERS:

* Junior goalie Olivia McMichael made seven saves for the Bantams while Nidus made a season-high eight saves in defeat.

* Each side had five penalty corners, though none directly led to a goal.
