Marshall Leung won the B singles title to highlight action for the Amherst College men's tennis team as the Mammoths opened the season at the ITA Division III New England Regional Championships this weekend at Bowdoin College.
The Mammoths are in action again next weekend as the fall tournament season continues at the MIT Classic, beginning Friday (Oct. 7) in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
TOURNAMENT HIGHLIGHTS:
* Chepuri and Esterowitz were awarded a first-round bye as one of the top 16 pairs in the 48-team draw and opened their tournament run with an 8-5 win over Daniel Papacica and Derek Shen of MIT in the round of 32. On Saturday, the Mammoths bested two NESCAC rivals, defeating third-seeded Tristan Bradley and Reid Staples of host Bowdoin in the round of 16 and earning an 8-4 win over Julian Wu and Zihao Yuan of Middlebury in the quarterfinals before falling to seventh-seeded Shawn Berdia and Jason Shuler of Williams, 8-4, in Sunday's semifinals.
* Chepuri also notched a pair of wins in the A singles bracket. Facing Papacica again on the singles court, Chepuri earned a 6-3, 6-2 victory in the round of 64 and then upset top-seeded Chase Cohen of Williams, 7-6(4), 6-0, in the round of 32 before falling to seeded Alex Ganchev of Tufts in the round of 16 by a 6-2, 6-3 score.
* In his first collegiate singles tournament, Leung rolled through the 47-player B singles bracket to claim the title. He opened on Friday with an 8-4 win over Brandeis junior Chen Liang in the round of 32. Leung defeated a pair of Jumbos on Saturday, claiming a 6-2, 7-6 victory against Tufts junior Mauricio Gutierrez in the round of 16 and a 6-1, 4-6, 10-3 win over Tufts senior Matthew Cashin in the quarterfinals. In Sunday's semifinal, Leung claimed a hard-fought 7-6, 7-6 win against Bates senior Nick Forester and then captured the title with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Tufts sophomore Lachie MacIntosh.
* Sophomore
Kobe Ellenbogen made the deepest run in the A singles bracket for the Mammoths, reaching the quarterfinals. He opened up with a 6-2, 6-3 upset of seeded Ben Mitchell of Wesleyan in the round of 64 and followed with a three-set victory over Williams sophomore Shawn Berdia in the round of 32 by a 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 score. Ellenbogen battled to another three-set victory on Saturday, defeating Babson sophomore Brady Anderson, 6-4, 1-6, 6-1, before falling to second-seeded Bradley of Bowdoin, 6-3, 6-3.
* Ellenbogen also picked up a win in doubles, forming a seeded pair with fellow sophomore
Ed Opie and defeating Bowdoin's Pieter Breuker and Mark Kneiss, 8-1, in the round of 32 before falling to eighth-seeded Derin Acaroglu and Vuk Vuksanovic of Tufts in a marathon set that ended 8-7(7) for the Jumbos.
* First-year
Georgios Chaidemenos won two matches in his first collegiate tournament with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Bates senior Leo Kupferman in the round of 64 and a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Brandeis first-year Tommy Harrison in the round of 32.
* First-year
Nikolai Dammholz also won his collegiate debut, defeating Bates first-year Theophile Sardain, 8-5, in the round of 32 of the B singles bracket before falling to MacIntosh of Tufts, 6-2, 6-3, in the round of 16.
* Junior
Micah Elias also won a match in the B singles draw, defeating Babson senior Parker Law, 8-2, in the round of 32.
