NORTHAMPTON, Mass. --
Muffie Mazambani scored for her sixth straight game Wednesday night, helping the #5-ranked Amherst College field hockey team to a 4-0 win over host Smith College.
Amherst improved to 11-2 on the season with its ninth straight victory. The Mammoths will take on Hamilton Saturday in Clinton, N.Y. at 11 a.m.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* Mazambani got Amherst on the board early, just 4:53 into the game, Senior
Natalie Hobbs stole a clear off the stick of a Smith player and pass it to Mazambani at the top of the circle. The junior forward turned quickly toward the goal and let loose with a laser of a shot that found the left side of the goal for her 13th goal of the season.
* Despite putting pressure and a lot of shots on the Smith goal, it was still 1-0 late in the second quarter. Pioneer goalkeeper Rory Harper made several outstanding saves to keep it that way. Smith had a penalty corner chance with 3:42 remaining in the half, but Mammoths defender
Sophia Kaplan intercepted the shot on goal and cleared the circle.
* Shortly after Kaplan's play,
Kate Smith lofted a ball into the Smith circle where
Sam Maynard batted it out of the air off the bounce only to have Harper stop that shot. But Maynard pried the rebound away from Harper, drove to her left, and flipped a backhand by harper and two defenders for a 2-0 lead with 1:50 to go before halftime.
* Just prior to halftime, Mammoth goalkeeper
Sara Nidus made a big play, stopping a wide-open shot from the top of the circle by Smith's Victoria Mello. At the half, Amherst had a 23-2 advantage in shots and a 4-1 edge in penalty corners. Harper had 16 saves.
* Amherst doubled its lead to 4-0 with goals 2:21 apart in the third quarter. Maynard was credited with her second goal of the game -- and 5th of the season -- when her backhand flip deflected off a Pioneer and into the goal 4:40 into the period.
Abbey Kays scored 2:21 later on a penalty corner insertion from Manzambani, firing a low shot into the bottom left-hand corner of the goal.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* Amherst completed the game with a 42-3 shot advantage, including a margin of 38 to 1 in shots on goal. The Mammoths had 11 penalty corners to the Pioneer's three.
* Nidus had the one save for Amherst, and Harper made a career-high 32 for Smith.
