Romeyn, Woodsum double winners as #22 Amherst tops Springfield, 162-118

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Senior Scott Romeyn and sophomore Kenneth Woodsum each won two individual races to lead the Amherst College men's swimming and diving team to a 162-118 victory at local rival Springfield College in the final dual meet of the season on Sunday afternoon at Linkletter Natatorium.

The Mammoths (6-1), ranked 22nd in the nation and 5th in the Northeast-North Region in the latest CSCAA Division III polls, complete the dual meet season with a winning record for the 45th straight season, while the Pride (6-4) conclude their dual meet season with a winning record for the first time since 2012-13.

Amherst will next compete in the NESCAC Championships from Feb. 17–20 at Colby College in Waterville, Maine. The Mammoths finished third the last time the championship was held in 2020 and will be seeking their first NESCAC title.

MEET HIGHLIGHTS

* The Mammoths opened the meet by taking the top two spots in the 200-yard medley relay with junior Kevin Ma, senior Gary Sun, Woodsum and Romeyn combining to earn the win in 1:33.60.

* Romeyn won both the 100-yard and 200-yard freestyle races. Romeyn (1:44.22) and sophomore Will Taylor (1:44.48) finished first and second in the 200 free and Romeyn led a Mammoths sweep of the 100 free, finishing in 46.91 ahead of Ma's season-best mark of 48.51 and sophomore Tyler Knightly's third-place time of 48.52.

* Woodsum earned wins in both the 100-yard backstroke and 100-yard butterfly. He led a Mammoths sweep in the 100 back with a season-best time of 53.41 for his first collegiate backstroke win with first-year Andrew Yuen finishing second and senior Jack Dengler third. Woodsum paced the field in the 100 fly with a time of 51.52 for his third win of the season in five starts in the event.

* Knightly won the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:14.41 in his first collegiate race at that distance with senior Peter Baird posting a season-best time of 4:16.16 to finish third.

* First-year Tor Metelmann led a Mammoths sweep in the 100-yard breaststroke, finishing in 59.71 for his third win in four starts in this event with Sun in second and senior Malcolm Scannell finishing third.

* Ma won his second 50-yard freestyle race of the season, touching in 21.89 ahead of sophomore Jeff Gerber, who finished second with a 22.57.

* Dengler and Yuen finished first and second in the 200-yard backstroke with Dengler's time of 2:00.45 earning his first collegiate win.

* Sophomore Andy Ni and Liam Loveless took the top two spots in the 200-yard breaststroke as Ni earned his first collegiate win with the top time of 2:14.75.
