AMHERST, Mass. -- Wesleyan scored twice in the third period Sunday afternoon to complete a rally from two goals down and defeat the Amherst College men's hockey team, 3-2, in NESCAC action at Orr Rink.
The Mammoths slipped to 6--9-2 overall and 5-6-1 in conference play. Wesleyan improved to 7-8-2, 6-4-2 in NESCAC play. Amherst is back in action Friday for a 3 p.m. game at Bowdoin College.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
* Amherst took a 1-0 lead at the 5:45 mark of the first period when
Tyler Bourque won a face-off back to the right point
Spencer Kimball fired the puck behind the Wesleyan goal where
Christian Powers flipped it back out into the slot, the puck skipped through Bourque all the way to
Greg McGunigle, who fired a shot past the Cardinal goalie Marc Smith.
* Just a short time later, the Mammoths built upon their lead with a power-play goal from
Ben Kuzma. Moving the puck very well on the man-up chance,
Joey Verkerke slipped a pass from the right point to
Max Thiessen at the left point. Thiessen pinpointed a pass to Kuzma stationed at the left circle face-off dot. Kuzma wristed a beautiful shot top shelf on the far right side for the two-goal advantage.
* Wesleyan rallied with a goal from Kyle Anderson 19 seconds into the second period. Emmet Powell and Danny Sorabella scored unassisted goals in the third period to give the Cardinals a lead.
* In the final seconds, Amherst put on a rush that resulted in Verkerke getting off a shot from the high slot, but Smith was there to smother it with 0.4 seconds remaining.
BY THE NUMBERS
* Wesleyan finished with a 27-22 advantage in shots. Smith had 20 saves and
Dan Dachille made 24 for the Mammoths. Each team had one power-play goal in the contest.
