MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – With wins in six events, the Amherst College men's track and field team won the Middlebury Winterfell, finishing first in a field of nine teams that included Division I Vermont on Saturday at Virtue Field House. The Mammoths posted 11 new qualifying times for the New England Division III Indoor Championships and several marks that were among the best in Division III so far this season.
The Mammoths finished with 153.5 points to clear second-place Vermont's score of 142 points.
MEET HIGHLIGHTS
* Junior Kelechi Eziri won the triple jump in his season debut, reaching 13.83m to qualify for New Englands with the 19th-best mark in Division III so far this season. The top 20 marks at the end of the season qualify for the NCAA Division III Championships in each event.
* The Mammoths took the top two spots in the high jump as first-year Camden Heafitz cleared 1.95m and senior Troy Colleran was right behind at 1.90m in his first high jump entry of the season with both marks good for New England qualification.
* Junior Chris Gong won the long jump and qualified for New Englands with a mark of 6.74m in his first meet of the season.
* Junior Keon Mazdisnian edged sophomore Theo Dassin to win the 5000m in a dramatic finish in the first collegiate race at that distance for both athletes. Mazdisnian (15:27.64) overtook Dassin (15:27.87) in the final stretch with both times earning a spot in New Englands.
* Junior Jack Trent and Colleran both posted New England qualifying times in the preliminaries of the 60m hurdles. Trent had the best Division III time of the day with a personal-best 8.72 and Colleran finished in 8.82 seconds.
* Junior Owen Daily won the mile with a personal-best and New England qualifying time of 4:20.87 in his first mile race of the season.
* Sophomores Wilson Spurrell and Kolya Markov-Riss were the top Division III finishers in the 600m. Spurrell qualified for New Englands with a 1:25.05 in his first collegiate 600m race while Markov-Riss, who qualified last week, was just one-hundredth of a second behind.
* Senior Henry Buren won the 60m dash and qualified for New Englands with a time of 7.05 in his first meet of the season.
* Senior Ajay Sarathy was the top Division III finisher in the 3000m with a personal-best time of 8:36.43, the 15th-best mark in Division III so far this season.
* The Mammoths wrapped up the meet with the top Division III finish in the 4x400m relay as senior Ben Wadsworth, Spurrell, first-year Thomas Ye and Markov-Riss finished in 3:30.71.
