Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Amherst drops 1-0 decision at #9 Norwich

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Cadets forward Aimee Headland scored the lone goal of the game as Norwich University edged the Amherst College women's ice hockey team, 1-0, in a matchup of two reigning conference champions on Tuesday evening at Kreitzberg Arena.

Senior goalie Alexa Berg made 33 saves to earn the shutout for the reigning New England Hockey Conference champion Cadets (10-4), who are ranked ninth in the nation in the latest USCHO Division III poll. This game was a rematch of a 2020 NCAA Tournament clash that took place on March 11, 2020, at Amherst, the last game before athletics shut down for over a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Cadets won that game by a 3-1 margin with Berg making 30 saves.

The reigning NESCAC champion Mammoths (5-7) return to conference play this weekend, hosting Trinity on Saturday and Sunday (Jan. 22–23) at 3 p.m. both days.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

  • The lone goal came at the 13:48 mark in the second period on an unassisted tally for Headland, her third goal of the season.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • The Mammoths held a 33-26 advantage in shots on goal but Berg stopped every shot for her first shutout of the season.
  • The Mammoths were whistled for only one penalty and both teams were perfect on the kill as Amherst went 0-for-3 on the power play. The Mammoths have taken only six penalties in the last six games and have not allowed a power-play goal in that stretch.
  • Faceoffs were nearly even with the Cadets holding a 20-18 edge.
