Jumbos come from behind for 74-66 win over Mammoths

AMHERST, Mass. – In a game that featured big swings and lead changes throughout, Tufts University made the last run to claim a 66-74 win over the Amherst College men's basketball team in NESCAC action on Saturday afternoon at LeFrak Gymnasium.

The Jumbos (5-8, 1-1 NESCAC) scored the final eight points of the game to complete a comeback in a game that the Mammoths (10-4, 2-2 NESCAC) led by 12 points in the first half. Senior guard Brennan Morris led four Jumbos in double figures with 14 points on 4-of-5 shooting from the field.

The Mammoths are back in action on Wednesday (Jan. 19) at 7 p.m., hosting 22nd-ranked Williams for a Little Three showdown.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

  • Mammoths senior captain Grant Robinson scored the first two baskets of the game and Amherst jumped out to a 6-0 lead but the Jumbos matched that effort to tie the game at 6-6.
  • From there, the Mammoths went on a 15-3 run to stretch the lead to 12 points before the midway point of the first half with a pair of threes from first-year forward Noah Helmke in that stretch.
  • The Jumbos came right back with 10 straight points to get back within two and tied the game at 22-22 soon after with seven minutes to go in the first half. The teams largely traded buckets for the rest of the first and went into halftime tied at 33-33.
  • The next stretch went to the Jumbos as an 11-2 run put Tufts up, 48-39, with 12 minutes to go. The Mammoths responded with a 12-2 run of their own with senior captain Garrett Day sinking a pair of free throws to put Amherst up, 51-50, with nine minutes to go.
  • The game stayed close for the next seven minutes with neither team able to find more than a three-point lead. Day made three free throws to tie the game at 66-66 with 2:17 to go but the Mammoths did not hit another shot after that point.
  • Tufts junior guard Dylan Thoerner gave the Jumbos the lead on a jumper off a Luke Rogers steal with just over a minute to play and the Jumbos hit 6-of-8 free throws down the stretch to claim the victory.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Junior guard Theo Henry tallied 11 points and a game-high 9 assists for the Jumbos while senior captain Will Brady also scored 11 points. Rogers added 10 points for Tufts.
  • Day led the Mammoths with 18 points, including an 8-of-8 performance at the free throw line, and added 5 rebounds while Robinson scored 14 points and led Amherst with 6 rebounds.
  • The Jumbos held a slight edge in shooting, hitting 43 percent (25-of-58) of their shots from the floor while the Mammoths shot 41 percent (24-of-59). Tufts was 43 percent (9-of-21) from beyond the arc while Amherst was held to 31 percent (5-of-16) on three-pointers.
  • The Jumbos held a 40-32 lead in rebounds and took advantage on the offensive glass, scoring 17 second-chance points off 12 offensive rebounds while holding the Mammoths to 3 second-chance points on 8 offensive rebounds.
