Amherst falls to #20 Williams, 60-54

AMHERST, Mass. – Ephs sophomore center Nate Karren tallied 17 points and 7 rebounds to lead 20th-ranked Williams College to a 60-54 win over the Amherst College men's basketball team in Little Three action on Wednesday night at LeFrak Gymnasium.

The game was a Little Three contest but not a NESCAC game between the two archrivals. The Ephs (13-1) won their third straight game since losing their only game of the season to the Mammoths (10-5) 11 days ago.

The Mammoths are back in action on Saturday, returning to NESCAC play with a visit to Hamilton at 1 p.m.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

  • After the Mammoths scored the first two baskets of the game, the Ephs answered to tie the score at 5-5. After trading field goals, Williams went on a 10-0 run to to take a 17-7 lead and pushed the lead to 12 before the Mammoths scored the final six points of the first half to cut the Ephs lead to 30-24 at the half.
  • Karren scored the first three baskets of the second half for Williams to build the lead back to 11 points but the Mammoths responded with a 14-3 run to tie the game at 40-40 on a three-pointer from Noah Helmke with 11:22 to go in the game.
  • Ephs first-year Declan Porter and Karren followed with back-to-back threes to put Williams back on top and the Ephs held off the Mammoths for the rest of the game.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Senior captain Grant Robinson led the Mammoths with 17 points, while fellow captain Garrett Day added 12 points and 5 rebounds. First-year center Will Scherer tallied 8 points, 8 rebounds and 3 blocks.
  • The Ephs had a slight edge in shooting in the first half, hitting 37 percent (10-of-27) of field goals while the Mammoths shot at 32 percent (9-of-28). Both teams shot an even 40 percent in the second half as the second half score was even at 30-30.
