Men's Soccer Posts Third Straight Shut Out in 3-0 Win Over Monks

AMHERST, Mass. – Putting their dynamic offense on full display, seven different Mammoths had a hand in Amherst's three scores as the men's soccer team posted their third straight shutout to power past Saint Joseph's College, 3-0, Thursday afternoon at Hitchcock Field.

With the win, Amherst improves to 4-1-0 on the season, while Saint Joseph's suffers its first loss and falls to 3-1-2 overall. The Mammoths return to play this Saturday, September 25 when they travel to Connecticut College for a 2:00PM conference battle.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS
  • Controlling the ball on the right side, Wyatt McCarthy '24 sparked the Mammoths' first score and what stood as the game-winner with 3:31 remaining in the first half as a drove a cross towards the box that connected with Micah Valadez-Bush '25. Sending a header towards frame, Valadez-Bush's attempt rang off the post before Jack O'Brien '22 cleaned up the rebound to tally his first goal of the season.
  • Capitalizing on a corner 5:06 into the second half, sophomore Ada Okorogheye's kick deflected off a defender and landed at the foot of Ben Clark-Eden '25 on the far right post for the one-touch score.
  • Adding an insurance tally with 16:04 remaining in regulation, Declan Sung '24 dished a pass to Ignacio Cubeddu '23 at the penalty dot who ripped a strike into the top right corner of the net.
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Junior Bernie White (4-1-0) earned the win in goal for the Mammoths, going untested in 80:40, while Max Landa '24 played the final 9:20 in relief. David Walbridge (3-1-2) made 11 stops in the losing effort for the Monks.
  • Keeping the visitors without a shot on net, Amherst closed out the contest owning a 27-3 advantage in shot attempts and a 4-0 edge in corner kicks.
