AMHERST, Mass. – A score by senior
Kyle Kelly in the 16th minute stood as the difference maker in a physical conference clash, as the Amherst College men's soccer team shut out Hamilton College, 1-0, Saturday afternoon at Hitchcock Field.
The Mammoths return to the field this Thursday, September 23 when they host Saint Joseph's College in a 4:00PM non-conference matchup.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- After forcing four saves by the Continentals' keeper in the opening minutes, Amherst broke through at the 16:25 mark following a corner kick by sophomore Ada Okorogheye from the left side. Driving the ball towards the scrum in front of the goal, Kelly got just enough on the ball to sneak a shot through traffic and into the nylon.
- Threatening with time winding down, Hamilton had two quality opportunities in the final 12 minutes of regulation, however junior keeper Bernie White had ice in his veins as he made a diving save on a rip by Greg Zimmerman from the top of the box in the 79th minute before coming through with a full extension stop on a shot from Luke Ehrenfreund from point blank range with 4:38 remaining to keep the visitors scoreless and lift Amherst to the 1-0 victory.
BY THE NUMBERS
- The Mammoths owned a 30-8 advantage in shots in the contest, including a commanding 19-1 edge in the first half, and put 17 shots on target to the Continentals' five.
- White (3-1) earned the win for Amherst in goal, making five saves. Tabbed with the start for Hamilton, Ben Ziegler registered nine saves in the losing effort, while Kai Haesslein made six stops in the final 45:00 in relief.
