#21 Amherst Still Undefeated After 75-61 Win in Western Mass Showdown at Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Senior captain Grant Robinson scored 17 points to help the Amherst College men's basketball team remain unbeaten this season with a 75-61 win at Western Massachusetts rival Springfield College on Tuesday night at Blake Arena.

The Mammoths (8-0), ranked 21st in the nation in the latest D3hoops.com poll, match their best start since 2016 and defeat the Pride (2-6) for the fourth straight season. Amherst is back in action on Tuesday, Dec. 28, when the Mammoths visit Farmingdale, New York, to take on SUNY Old Westbury.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

  • The first half was a back-and-forth battle as neither team held more than a four-point lead until the final minute. The Pride took an early 5-1 lead when Jacob Morales drained a three-pointer but the Mammoths scored the next six points to take the lead.
  • Amherst went up by four when Ryker Vance threw down a dunk with just under five minutes to go but back-to-back jumpers from Springfield guard Collin Lindsay tied the game at 25-25.
  • The Mammoths followed that with a 7-0 run, capped by a Garrett Day steal leading to a Robinson fast break that gave the Mammoths the largest lead of the first half at 32-25.
  • A 9-0 run early in the second half pushed the Amherst lead into double figures for the first time. The Pride got back within six midway through the second, but the Mammoths responded with a 12-1 run to take a 63-47 lead with 5:48 to go and held off Springfield for the rest of the contest.
