AMHERST, Mass. – Beavers first-year guard Nate Amado tallied 17 points and 7 rebounds to lead Babson College to a 70-59 win over the Amherst College men's basketball team on Friday afternoon at LeFrak Gymnasium.
Amherst senior captain Garrett Day scored a career-high 35 points as the Mammoths (8-1), ranked 20th in the nation in the latest D3hoops poll, suffered their first loss of the season, snapping an eight-game winning streak. Amherst returns to action on Monday (Jan. 3) at 5 p.m. for a matchup with Little Three rival Wesleyan. The Beavers (7-4) host Emerson on Wednesday.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- Day scored the first 9 points for the Mammoths on a trio of three-pointers to give Amherst an early 9-4 lead.
- Back-to-back buckets from Andrew Kirkpatrick brought the Beavers back to tie the score at 15-15. Babson went up 23-17 midway through the first half but Amherst answered with 6 straight points to tie the game at 23-23.
- The Beavers held a four-point lead at halftime but the Mammoths took the lead again five minutes into the second half on a Will Scherer layup that put Amherst up 40-39.
- With the score tied at 46-46, Day hit a three-pointer to put Amherst back on top but the Beavers answered with a 12-0 run to take a 9-point lead with just over five minutes to go and Babson held off Amherst from there.
BY THE NUMBERS
- The Beavers had three players score in double figures as Kieran Dorney posted 14 points and 5 rebounds and Spencer Cline added 12 points off the bench.
- Day's 35 points were the most for a Mammoth since Connor Green '16 scored 39, also against Babson, in December 2015.
- First-year Ryker Vance blocked a career-best 4 shots. Michael Schretter led the Mammoths with 9 rebounds.
- The Beavers shot 41 percent from the field while holding the Mammoths to 30 percent shooting, a season low for Amherst and the first game this season in which the Mammoths were outshot.
