Mammoths Comeback Stymied by Cardinals as Late Goal Gives Wesleyan 4-3 Win

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. -- Cardinals captain Matt Zandi scored late in the third period to break a 3-3 tie and lift Wesleyan University to a 4-3 win over the Amherst College men's ice hockey team in a back-and-forth NESCAC contest on Saturday afternoon at Spurrier-Snyder Rink.

The Mammoths (2-4, 1-2 NESCAC) have another NESCAC road trip next weekend, dropping the puck at Middlebury on Friday (Dec. 10) at 7 p.m. The defending NESCAC champion Cardinals (3-3-1, 3-0-1 NESCAC) remain unbeaten in conference play and next step out of conference for a trip to Plymouth State on Friday.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

  • Sophomore forward Ryan Tucker wasted no time scoring his first collegiate goal, firing a shot into the back of the net just 33 seconds into the game to give the Mammoths an early lead.
  • The Cardinals took the lead with a pair of power-play goals later in the first period. Tyler Levine tied the game at the 7:22 mark and Wiggle Kerbrat put Wesleyan on top at 14:48 as both Cardinals scored their first goals of the season.
  • Wesleyan took a 3-1 lead late in the second period when Levine scored his second goal of the game off an assist from Kerbrat.
  • The Mammoths battled back in the third period to tie the game once again. Junior forward Connor Merrill scored his first goal of the season 4:12 into the period and Pieter von Steinbergs tied the game with a power-play goal at the 14:36 mark, the second of the season for the senior defenseman.
  • On another power-play opportunity late in the third, Zandi ripped a shot from the blue line that put the Cardinals back on top with his third goal of the season at 16:40.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • McGinnis assisted the goals from Tucker and von Steinbergs for the first multi-point game of his career.
  • Tucker also added an assist on Merrill's goal for the first multi-point game of his career.
  • von Steinbergs tallied a goal and an assist, giving him a three-point weekend and the team lead with 7 points.
  • The Mammoths held a 23-19 advantage in shots on goal but Cardinals goalie Marc Smith made 20 saves to earn the win.
  • The Cardinals went 3-for-6 on the power play while the Mammoths were 1-for-4.
