WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – After a Mammoth comeback sent the game to overtime, Jack Forrest scored to lift Williams College to a 3-2 overtime win against the Amherst College men's ice hockey team in NESCAC action on Sunday afternoon at Chapman Rink.
Both teams will get points in the NESCAC standings under the conference's new standings format this season. The Ephs (5-3, 5-1 NESCAC) will earn two points for the overtime win and the Mammoths (2-5, 1-3) earn one point for an overtime loss. Regulation wins are worth three points and ties are worth 1.5 points.
The Mammoths now break for the holidays and return to action on Tuesday, Jan. 4, hosting 12th-ranked Curry.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- The Ephs scored first when sophomore center Jamie Cates netted his first collegiate goal 5:17 into the game.
- Ephs junior winger Mac Carso made it a 2-0 game when he scored his first goal of the season with five minutes remaining in the second period.
- The Mammoths mounted a comeback beginning In the final minutes of the second period. Sophomore forward Quinton Fox poked the puck in through a scrum for his first collegiate goal at 18:54 in the second.
- Senior forward Sean Wrenn tied the game midway through the third period when he knocked in a rebound off Ben Kuzma's shot for his second goal of the season.
- The game remained tied into overtime and in the 3-on-3 extra frame, Forrest scored the game-winning goal 3:53 into the period, the second goal of the season for the senior center.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Shots on goal were nearly even in the contest with the Ephs holding a 31-29 edge. Ephs junior goaltender Evan Ruschil, who entered the game leading the nation in goals against average and save percentage, made 27 saves to earn the win. Mammoths first-year netminder Connor Leslie stopped 28 shots in his collegiate debut.
- Penalty kills were perfect on both sides in a game that was light on penalties. The Ephs were 0-for-3 on the power play, while the Mammoths were 0-for-1.
