Mammoths Strong Off the Blocks in 188-108 Win Over Colby in Season Opener

AMHERST, Mass. -- The Amherst College men's swimming and diving team earned a 188-108 win over NESCAC foe Colby College on Saturday at Pratt Pool in the season opener for both teams. Senior captain Scott Romeyn and sophomore Nolan Scanlan each won two individual events and were part of two winning relays while first-year Tor Metelmann won three individual races in his collegiate debut. With the team making its return to the pool for the first time since February 2020, a bevy of Mammoths were making their collegiate debuts.

The Mammoths are back in action on Monday (Nov. 22) with a trip to NESCAC and Little Three rival Wesleyan for a dual meet at 5 p.m.

MEET HIGHLIGHTS

  • Romeyn swam the freestyle leg of Amherst's winning 200-yard medley relay team and sprinted to wins in the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle before anchoring the winning 400-yard freestyle relay team to close the meet.
  • Scanlan was also part of both winning relay teams and swept the backstroke events in his collegiate debut, winning at both 100 yards and 200 yards.
  • Metelmann led a dominant Amherst performance in the breaststroke races, leading Mammoth sweeps of the top three spots in both the 100-yard and 200-yard events, while the rookie also won the 200-yard individual medley.
  • Sophomore Justin Papagelis, also making his collegiate debut, won the 100-yard butterfly, was part of the winning 400 free relay team and earned points with a third-place finish in the 200 fly.
  • Sophomore Tyler Knightly, another newcomer to collegiate competition, won the 200-yard freestyle and earned points with a third-place finish in the 500 free.
  • The 500-yard freestyle was won by first-year Gabriele-Filippo Lunardi, who also posted Amherst's top time with a second-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly.
  • The Mules were led by sophomore Sam Cahaly, who swept the diving events.
