Day's MVP Performance Leads Mammoths to 79-41 Win Over SUNY Geneseo and Ken Wright Invitational Title

AMHERST, Mass. -- Senior captain Garrett Day scored a season-high 26 points along with 4 rebounds and 5 steals to earn MVP honors in the Ken Wright '52 Memorial Invitational Tournament and lead the Amherst College men's basketball team to the tournament title with a 79-41 win over SUNY Geneseo on Saturday afternoon at LeFrak Gymnasium.

Day was joined on the All-Tournament Team by fellow captain Grant Robinson, who scored 21 points in Amherst's semifinal win, and Junior Michael Schretter, who averaged 10.5 points and 5.5 rebounds over the weekend. Captains Harry Dignan and Michael Gannon of the Knights (1-2) and Massachusetts Liberal Arts senior Hayden Bird also garnered All-Tournament honors.

The Mammoths (4-0) continue their homestand on Tuesday (Nov. 23), hosting local rival Westfield State, the reigning MASCAC champion, at 7 p.m. at LeFrak Gymnasium.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

  • Day scored the first five points of the game and the Mammoths never trailed. Amherst steadily increased its lead to 15 points in the first half before the Knights used an 11-0 run to cut the Amherst lead to 29-25 in the final minute of the first half. Day hit a buzzer-beating three-pointer at halftime to send the Mammoths to the locker room with a 7-point lead.
  • Early in the second half, the Mammoths went on a 14-2 run to reassert control of the game and hold off the Knights from there. Amherst closed the game on a 13-0 run, holding SUNY Geneseo scoreless over the final 5:57.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • All of Day's field goals in the game were three-pointers as the Pittsburgh native shot 8-of-14 from beyond the arc. His 5 steals are a career high.
  • Freshman Ryker Vance collected a career-best 10 rebounds in his fourth collegiate game.
  • Freshman Will Scherer blocked 3 shots and has now blocked at least one shot in each of his first four collegiate games.
  • The Mammoths out rebounded the Knights by a 50-34 margin and forced 20 Geneseo turnovers while committing 13 turnovers. That turnover disparity led to an 18-8 Amherst advantage in points off turnovers, including a 14-4 lead in the second half.
  • Gannon led the Knights with 12 points and added 5 rebounds.
