Day's Career High Lifts Undefeated Mammoths to 89-59 Win Over Westfield State

AMHERST, Mass. -- Garrett Day scored 31 points and Grant Robinson notched a double-double to lead the Amherst College men's basketball team to an 89-59 win over Westfield State University on Tuesday night at LeFrak Gymnasium.

The Mammoths (5-0) remain undefeated on the season with the win over the reigning MASCAC champion Owls (5-2). Amherst is back in action at LeFrak Gymnasium on Tuesday, Nov. 30, hosting Thomas for another non-conference duel.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Mammoths raced out to a 10-0 lead with a pair of Day threes in the opening stretch. Shooting 51 percent (18-of-35) from the field in the first half while holding the Owls to 27 percent (7-of-26), Amherst never trailed and Robinson's jumper at the end of the half gave the Mammoths a 46-25 lead.
  • An 11-0 run that spanned halftime got the Amherst lead up to 30 points. The Mammoths led by as many as 37 in the second half before the Owls went on a 9-2 run but could get no closer and Amherst came away with a 30-point win at the final buzzer.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Day tallied a career-best 31 points as he hit 8 three-pointers for the second game in a row and went 7-for-7 at the free throw line. All but one of his field goal attempts were from beyond the arc and the senior captain is now a perfect 13-for-13 at the free throw line this season.
  • The Mammoths were a perfect 9-for-9 from the free throw line as a team with junior Yaya Zarroug hitting both his free throws in addition to Day's performance.
  • Robinson scored 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for his first double-double of the season while chipping in 4 assists.
  • First-year Canin Reynolds tallied a career-high 12 points on 5-of-9 field goal shooting in his fifth collegiate game.
