Robinson Eclipses 1,000 Career Points as Mammoths Top MCLA, 100-38, in Wright Invitational

AMHERST, Mass. -- Senior captain Grant Robinson scored his 1,000th career point as part of a 21-point performance to lead the Amherst College men's basketball team to a 100-38 win over Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts in the semifinals of the Ken Wright '52 Memorial Invitational Tournament on Friday at LeFrak Gymnasium.

The Mammoths (3-0) advance to face SUNY Geneseo in the championship game on Saturday, Nov. 20, at 2 p.m. That game will be preceded by the consolation game in which the Trailblazers (1-4) will face Rutgers-Camden.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

  • Entering the game with 997 career points, Robinson quickly netted his milestone basket with a three-pointer for the first points of the game. Robinson followed that with another trey and after an 8-0 start to the game, the Mammoths never trailed.
  • An 18-0 run later in the first half give the Mammoths a 36-11 lead with five minutes to go before halftime and freshman Christopher Mitchell scored his first collegiate points with a pair of baskets to close the first half and give Amherst a 46-19 halftime lead.
  • The Mammoths continued to build the lead in the second half, outscoring the Trailblazers 35-8 over the final 10 minutes.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Robinson becomes the 31st member of Amherst's 1,000 point club on a night where he shot 9-of-12 from the field and 3-of-4 from beyond the arc. His new career total of 1,018 points puts him in 29th place among Amherst's all-time leading scorers. His 3 blocks in tonight's game mark a career high.
  • Three other Mammoths scored in double figures as Garrett Day scored 15 points, Canin Reynolds scored 11 and Michael Schretter added 10 points.
  • Freshman Noah Helmke tallied a game-high 11 rebounds to set a new career best in his rookie campaign.
  • Junior Yaya Zarroug led the Mammoths with a career-best 5 assists.
  • The Mammoths shot 55 percent (39-of-71) from the field and held the Trailblazers to just 15 percent (10-of-65) shooting.
